Procedural Programmatic Art

Are you a programmer who has no artistic bone in your body? Of course you aren’t…but you are a programmer, who knows how to make pixels dance to your preset, yet tastefully called, functions and algorithms. There’s a surge now to celebrate and develop computer generated art that thinks and reacts according to it’s [user’s] designs. Never the same twice. Sometimes funny. Sometimes hauntingly beautiful. Always amazing when you start to break it down to it’s component parts, and realize what’s being made. Let’s celebrate that movement here in Winnipeg. Developers…show of your skilz and make us some procedural art! I’ve embedded a [Tron] reference in the description just for you!

Interactive Installation

This is a procedural hybrid. This type of art or installation doesn’t have to do so much with an attempt and a mini Salvador Dali AI running the show…it’s run by your web cam, or your Wiimote, or your cell phones, or whatever other input device you’ve dreamed up and hacked into to make your visuals come to life. Want to make people look weird standing in front of your art installations, holding their hands out and shaking their bodies? This is your chance? Submit!

Linear Presentation

And let’s not forget about our old standby here. Are you a videographer, and animator or a graphic designer who can whip up canned product presentations in your sleep? Well, let’s get rid of the canned product and insert whatever the heck you like? Blow us away with your graphics the same way those Kinetix 3DS Max Demo reels used to make us drool. Show us your stuff.

Dot, dot, dot...

Don’t have time to make something new? Well collect one of your old renders or apps and submit. Remember, this contest isn’t about stress, it’s about celebrating the skills and talent that reside right here in our city. But if does stress you enough to finally work on that piece that’s been sitting dormant in the back of your mind for the past two years but you figure why bother because you don’t have a social event to unveil your latent masterpiece at…[big breath]…well then get to work! October 22nd is not far off!

And why Blitzgiving?

Blit - Bit blit (bitblt, blitting etc.) is a computer graphics operation in which several bitmap patterns are combined into one using a "raster operator". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_blit

Blitz – Unfortunately this was originally a constant barrage of bombs poured on Britain during the Second World War. The derivative we’re using is a move evolved version of the word, which is more akin to a constant barrage of excitement. Kinda like the ballroom blitz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrBDivsSe3k

Giving – Giving away prizes, giving away recognition. Giving to Joints In Motion through a portion of our final event ticket sales.

Blitzgiving – hey…awfully close to Thanksgiving. Hopefully those elusive turkey enzymes have worn off by then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan

Stay tuned for site updates as submissions begin to come in.
